The Purpose of Signage

I got stuck recently because of troubles reading signage. Surely you can argue that I could work on my sharpness but regardless, it is a fact that some signs are hopelessly undecipherable while others simply aren't. The sign above is an example of great signage. It leaves no room for error and acknowledges that at German motorway speed you can't take more information than this.

On the contrary, no matter how hard you try with the signs below, your chances of getting your direction wrong, depend on the number of choices that you are given. And honestly, can you find your way by means of road numbers only?
